Tokyo, Japan – July 28, 2025 – The Tokyo Fire Department has announced the acquisition of a new Airbus H225 helicopter, following a tender won by Airbus Helicopters. The new aircraft will replace an older model as part of the department’s fleet modernization strategy, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining high operational readiness for critical missions such as aerial firefighting, search and rescue, emergency medical services, and disaster response.

“For nearly six decades, Airbus has stood alongside the Tokyo Fire Department in its unwavering commitment to public safety and emergency response,” said Jean-Luc Alfonsi, Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters in Japan. “The department’s continued trust in the H225 reflects the reliability and versatility our helicopters bring to every mission. With its proven endurance and adaptability in all conditions, the H225 is fully equipped to support lifesaving operations for years to come.”

The new H225 will be configured to handle urgent rescue missions with speed and precision. It will feature an integrated search and rescue mode for rapid target detection, as well as onboard stretchers for immediate medical care. A belly-mounted water tank will enable effective aerial firefighting during critical situations.

The Tokyo Fire Department began its aerial operations in 1967 with an Allouette III helicopter. Since then, it has maintained a strong partnership with Airbus and currently operates a fleet of three H225s and three AS365s, all dedicated to protecting the population from the skies.

The H225, the latest addition to the Super Puma family, is known for its high performance in challenging conditions, excellent range, and heavy-lift capacity. The aircraft features modern avionics and autopilot systems that enhance operational safety while reducing pilot workload.

Across Japan, 24 H225 helicopters are in service with Ministry of Defense agencies and public entities, playing vital roles in missions ranging from rescue and firefighting to VIP, cargo, and personnel transport.
